Well we are at the end of the year and I have been reflecting on everything that has happened within our family and home and my heart is full of gratitude. So many dreams coming to fruition, so many learning experiences, quite a few challenges, but overall, a joyous year. I love reflecting on the past year and begin making goals for the new year coming. It’s refreshing for me.
We have had the bitter/sweet experience of watching 3 of our adult children leave the nest this year and this mama is one proud mama of how awesome our children have turned out. We also found out that we are expecting our 8th child (boy) in May and we are so happy to be blessed with our new addition to our family in 2016. There is never a dull moment in our home and we love it!
We began our dream of having a farm this year and it has been a blessing for our family in so many ways. We started out with raising chickens, then went on to getting our livestock guardian dog to begin training her for her big duty of guarding. We then ventured with raising goats and have had so much fun in doing so. Through raising our livestock, our family has been able to have the experiences of adding on early morning, mid-day and evening chores in taking care of the animals, their shelter, checking for eggs, trimming hooves, clipping wings, always making sure they have fresh, clean water, and loving on them all. I must say, I really expected to have more complaining or whining in having to do these things consistently, but I am amazed because for the most part, there has not been. Everyone understands that we all have our part in helping tend our little farm and in doing so, we will also receive blessings in return. Through homesteading, our family has been able to bond in a special way and I am so grateful to be able to raise our family in this way.
It has been awesome to be able to have fresh eggs right from our back yard and knowing that they come from healthy, happy, chickens who have only consumed their natural diet. Clean, pure eggs – yes, thank you! It has been a great learning experience in raising chickens and in doing so, one of our sons realized his passion for chickens and birds overall, which has lead to many great lessons for homeschool. Score!
Raising and training our livestock guardian (Great Pyrenees) has been a lot of fun and also a lot of work. It has been worth it though and she is turning out to be a fine guardian and member of our family and farm. It’s been an adventure training her and in doing so, our family has learned a great deal about raising livestock guardian dogs with the help of Facebook support groups. Those groups have been immense in our learning adventure.
Then there’s the goats. I must admit, they have been my favorite in raising this year. I love my chickens and totally love raising them, but there’s something about the goats that just warms my heart. They are so personable and they are fun to hang out with. Each one of our’s are so different in their personalities and its been a joy in bonding with each of them.
So as I reflect this last year, I am grateful for so many blessings… my Savior and brother – Jesus Christ, my family, our homestead, being able to homeschool our children, our freedom, friends, our business, all that I have learned this year, this blog and all of my readers – thank you! There is so much to be grateful for. I saw this quote on Facebook this week that a friend shared and it is so true – “If you want to find happiness, find gratitude.” …”Permanent happiness comes from you choosing to be permanently happy. When you choose happiness, then you attract all the happy things as well. The happy things are the icing on the cake, but the cake is the happiness.”
I hope you all have a wonderful Christmas and a blessed new year! Thank you for your support and friendship. I look forward to sharing with you as our adventure continues in 2016.
