For those who follow me on Instagram or Facebook, you may have already seen where I posted about my excitement in reading Lisa Steele’s book, Fresh Eggs Daily: Raising Happy, Healthy Chickens…Naturally. I recently checked it out from the library and then immediately before I was even finished reading it, got my own copy because it is that good! It is a book that I know I will refer back to often. And now, I am so super excited to announce that she has allowed me to do a giveaway for a copy of her book!!!
I have read armfuls of books on raising chickens, have read many online resources, and have even grown up around chickens, but I have to say, I learned more from this book and her blog about raising chickens naturally than anywhere else. Her website, Fresh Eggs Daily (same name as her book), has so many different wonderful resources, recipes, and care guides to learn from and a lot of them are all put together beautifully in her book which makes for easy referencing. In addition, she has great tips on how to help your chickens endure common challenges that may occur during the changing seasons such as summer and winter. She teaches holistic approaches to help care for your chickens. Oh, and the pictures (which she took herself) throughout the book are gorgeous!
I am very passionate about natural health and care for myself and our family as well as our pets. They are, after all, part of our family. We have used herbs within our family for many years now, so when I read her book, it made perfect sense to me. Our family not only loves our chickens as pets, but they will be providing food for us through their eggs, so why wouldn’t I want to provide for our chickens the best natural care too?
Using herbs for our chickens and their coop can provide numerous benefits including the quality of our flock’s life, better egg layers, a natural insect and rodent repellent, healthy treats, great smelling coop and a beautiful coop too! All, which makes for happy chickens, which in turn, makes for healthy and delicious eggs! In Fresh Eggs Daily: Raising Happy, Healthy Chickens…Naturally, you will find many wonderful recipes and DIY projects. You will learn about which herbs are best to use for chickens and which ones to avoid. She also goes over other natural ways to care for your chickens. It is an easy to read book, has a hardbound beautiful cover, and it is written in a conversational tone which makes for a delightful reading. Overall, I came away from this book with confidence in knowing how to better raise our chickens naturally, how to provide the best possible environment for them to thrive, and to even understand our chickens better.
This is not a book that teaches a beginner’s guide for keeping chickens, and she even mentions that at the beginning. However, it does teach some basic care, and all of the information in it is invaluable whether you are a beginner, experienced, or are even just interested in raising chickens. Her teachings are not your typical teachings you will find in most chicken keeping books. This lady is amazing! I just love her site and book and can’t wait for her next book, Duck Eggs Daily: Raising Happy, Healthy Ducks…Naturally, to come out this fall! If your interested in raising ducks, you can pre-order her new book on Amazon now! I can’t wait to get my copy because of course, ducks will be joining our homestead eventually.
